Call for scores!
Freshly Squeezed: Holidays with a Twist
The International Orange Chorale of San Francisco (IOCSF) announces a call for scores for our Fall 2023 concert season. The series will be titled “Freshly Squeezed: Holidays with a Twist” in keeping with our tradition of Freshly Squeezed concerts that showcase newly composed choral music. For this series, we’re looking to find 8-10 pieces that reimagine and riff on recognizable holiday-season melodies, carols, hymns etc.

Guidelines for submitted pieces
We’re looking for pieces that:
Reimagine recognizable holiday songs, themes, and/or melodies, with emphasis on the reimagine part. We’re not looking for new arrangements of familiar carols or the like: we want works that take a holiday “standard” as source material and make a genuinely, thoroughly new piece of music out of it.
Are 3-6 minutes in length.
Are suitable for a 30-40 voice SATB ensemble. Divisi are fine as long as there are no more than 16 total parts at any one time. Solos are fine too.
Are preferably a cappella. We will consider pieces with piano accompaniment. No other instrumental accompaniment, please.
Submission procedure
Composers interested in having works considered for our concert are invited to submit using the form below. Up to two works per composer may be submitted. Submissions will be accepted until 11:59 PM Pacific Time on July 15, 2023. We aim to notify composers by August 15, 2023 September 1, 2023 (now extended!) about whether their works have been selected. There is no fee for submissions.
Required materials for submission
Your name and year of birth as you would want it to appear on a program if your piece is selected. Note that there are no age restrictions for submissions — we just want to make sure we credit you appropriately.
An appropriate email address for correspondence, so we can contact you with our selection decision and follow up regarding any items as needed.
An anonymized PDF score of each submitted piece (up to two). Please remove any instances of your name or other personal identification (including your requested year of birth) from the score(s) so that our selection committee can evaluate the pieces blind. Compositions will be presented for evaluation separately from the information you provide about your identity.
A sound file of each submitted piece, which may be a MIDI realization or a recording of a prior performance. This is optional but highly recommended.
Indicate whether the work is unperformed (so would be a world premiere), performed previously but not in North America, or performed previously in North America but not the SF Bay Area.
Indicate cost per score for IOC to purchase rights to perform. If IOCSF selects your piece for our program, we’ll purchase copies as we would for any other piece, and perform it at our concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area in December 2023.
Certify that you have appropriate rights to the source material and will provide documentation if selected.
Submission Details & Files
Your submission will remain anonymous to the IOCSF Team evaluating scores that have been submitted for selection.
